| Customer Reviews:
Very useful. Has saved me on a few occassions. July 28, 2010 Michael S. Wolfson (Mile High City) I have been very happy with this product (although the version I own is slightly different than the one pictured).
It is perfect for a quick jump start (for instance, if your very busy kid manages to turn something on that you didn't expect, the night before you are due to get to the airport early, and your wife has already left for work, and you are tired, and the dog won't stop barking...).
Sorry, where was I - oh, this thing works perfectly. It is extremely easy to bring this battery pack to the front of a car, and hook it up. Much easier then trying to maneuver 2 cars so they are close enough to string the cables between.
I did bring it camping, with a coffee maker (thinking I would be the hero with fresh coffee in the morning), and it didn't work. I suppose the amperage of my unit (which might be lower power than this one, I am not sure) - wasn't enough to run the coffee maker.
Otherwise this thing is great, and is a purchase I have been very pleased with.
4 year owner, great product July 10, 2010 D. Franciamone I have owned this item for over 4 years. I have never owned a different model or brand so I can only cover how reliable and useful it has been....VERY. I initially bought this to recharge my car when my battery went dead. I have since used every function of this device. I have a slow leak in a tire that I pump up every week or two with this and I run my 95w laptop off of it every few weeks (it lasts for about 4 hours if I put the laptop on "powersaver mode").
The only problem I have ever had occured just this week. I had to pull out the battery as it wasn't being recharged correctly. I hooked the battery (it's a 19ah battery for those that care) to a proper recharging station and it is fully functional again. I have been very happy with this purchase.
Don't leave on a trip without one ! June 28, 2010 Ivar O (RI) It works very well. Why wait for roadside assistance? It also good to run small appliances like your laptop. Don't get a little, under powered one, this one is just big enough without being too huge.....at least for me, a 6 ft. man.
Great unit, don't expect miracles June 24, 2010 K. Kalani Patterson (Studio City, CA USA) This is a great unit. Most people complaining on these boards just have no clue as to what to expect.
Some are whining it's too heavy. But then they whine battery life is too short. There's no such thing as a free lunch... you want free lightweight power, buy a solar panel. And hope you always have enough sunlight. Batteries weigh a lot. Try carrying around a car battery, and you'll see what "heavy" is... these are VERY portable by comparison. (Of course, back to the "free lunch" thing, the smaller battery inside doesn't offer as much juice as the larger car battery does. Common sense.)
You need a standard household extension cord to charge this. Not included. I have many, so no big deal. It's nice to be able to run a LONG extension cord to charge this from a tent that is not close to an outlet, so I consider that a win. Also nice that the unit doesn't have to be bigger sitting in a tent, just to store a power cable that otherwise useless in the tent. And no worries about losing a special proprietary power cable, either.
I've used this for several years, to power a boom box (I have a boom box that takes 12v DC in D batteries... some battery clips ending in a cigarette plug and you get good runtimes off the little battery by avoiding the inefficiencies of inverters). I've never jumped a car with it, but I know it will if I need to. I've used fast AC air mattress inflators to blow up many mattresses while camping, recharged phones, and inflated several tires with it. The inflator is slow, but gets the job done, and no need to run lines to the car battery and other annoying things while it runs. Handy, especially for my poor friends who found their tire flat while camping far from civilization! As with any small inflator, if it goes too long, it will overheat and shut down. Let it cool a bit, and resume to finish. Usually not an issue except with the biggest tires (or multiple tires). I'd use a 12v DC special inflator for pumping a lot of air mattresses, though.
The battery could be bigger. But then it would be heavier. Get too heavy and you may as well actually carry around a car battery, inverter, car battery charger, light, jumper cables, and a compressor. That's a lot of junk, and VERY heavy! Yes you make compromises by carrying this all-in-one unit, but I think those compromises are very reasonable and leave you with an excellent, useful product.
The light is handy. It's not going to light up your whole campsite, but when you need some light, you have it. 'Nuff said.
I left mine in a closet for nearly 2 years, and was very relieved when I pulled it out and it still took a charge. (Still had one, in fact!) Not everyone would be as lucky after abusing the battery so severely (batteries eat themselves if you allow them to discharge too far), but so far, my luck has held and my Electromate is still delivering plenty of juice. I do keep mine stored in an indoor closet, so temps are steady and reasonable... leaving any battery product (especially gel lead acid AGM batteries) to bake in high temps will kill it in short order.
Thank you to the reviewer Richard Schramm (see his review above), who apparently did a take-apart to learn this unit carries a CB17-12 battery inside (12v 17 amp hrs), if you need to replace it, which is inevitable... no battery lasts forever. (Especially if it's abused like mine was!) Replacements seem to be available online for under $50.
