Product Description USB + AA Charger
Ultra compact, ultra lightweight and yet very durable, the PowerFlim USB + AA Solar Charger is ideal for everyday use. The USB + AA Solar Charger charges most small USB devices.
Proprietary charging circuitry maximizes charge into the batteries. It provides full charge in four hours of full sun, and with a charging light on the side of the enclosure, indicates charging status.
Six grommets are built into the charger to allow for secure fastening to a pack or to the ground. Direct integration of the PowerFilm flexible solar panels onto the fabric allows for easy storage into a pocket.

doesnt really charge August 24, 2010 xt (Lexington, KY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
+very well constructed
+comes with great batteries (eneloop)
+rolls up compact
-doesnt really seem to work
takes hours and hours in full exposure to sunlight to fully charge. however this is NOT my complaint. thats the limitation of solar paneling.
my complaint is even when charged, it barely provides enough juice for devices. once i brought a blackberry 8320 (on airplane/non-transmission mode) from 20 to 60%.... about 30 minutes of juicing. a palm pre will recharge maybe 15% battery capacity if lucky.
my imagined practical use would be to leave it on the car dash at all times... once in a while if a smartphone runs out of juice it can power back up to make a 5 minute call or use the navigation to drive home. well, unless you're in the sunlight all day, and have 20-30 minutes to wait for it to power the phone, the solution isnt very realistic.
fun toy, not much real use
Update on charging certain electronics July 22, 2010 Bob Special Note for Motorola Droid Users: Some of our staffers own them. Droids with less than 90% battery power try to 'outsmart' the USB standards to get faster charge times. They try to intelligently query the device for 500MAh, then 600, then 700 (which works on some PC USB ports). During this query the Droid goes through a rapid sucession of Charging/Discharging status changes. This much like "running in place" - alot of work and getting nowhere - the result is Droids do not get an effective charge. Powerfilm is working on this and may have a fix in future versions.
The only current solution is to get another version of charger. We have successfully gotten Motorola Droid to take charge from:
1.) The Powerfilm 5 Watt Solar Panel in concert with the Motorola 12V Car Adapter
2.) The USB Port on the Hand Crank Eton Grundig FRS160 Emergency Radio
I only rated this a 5 because I just bought one and I am hopeful after researching a lot of solar chargers.
I found this useful info on another website and thought I would post it here for the gentleman who was having some issues with his charger.
Fried my iPhone 3GS July 20, 2010 H. Polak (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really wanted to like this device having read the reviews. I bought it for backpacking to allow me to charge both the AA batteries my GPS is using as well as the iPhone 3GS I carry for music and communications.
I tried it at home and everything seemed fine, so I took it with me last week on my trip to Yosemite. I used stronger 2400mw batteries in it. I tried to charge my iPhone on the first night and the iphone complained this is not a compatible charging device. However it did seem to power the phone (power plug rather than lightning icon on the battery) so I kept it connected so when I make a call it will use AA battery power and not iphone battery. I used it like this for 2 more days on several occasions.
When I got back to my car, my iPhone, which was drained of battery power at this point, would not charge any more. It did not charge at home as well. going to the apple store confirmed the iphone was dead, something in the charging circuits was fried. I am just out of warranty and need to buy a new phone.
I have to assume it was the AA charger. the phone didn't get wet or hit. I have not tried with the new phone I got... I won't risk it again...
Still 3 starts since it seems fine for regular AA charging.
Also note you HAVE to have batteries inserted to charge a USB device. it will not power directly from the panels to USB.
Won't charge if you are using your iPad. July 15, 2010 H. Oh 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased this so I can use my iPad extensively for a long period outside the field, but I found out that you can't really use it and charge your iPad at the same time. You need to turn your iPad off the screen to begin charging. Charging itself is working well tho. Just won't fit my purpose.
Seems to charge batteries well, won't charge iPhone 3GS July 13, 2010 rob I had high hopes for this panel, and it is extremely well-designed - it packs down small and feels very reliable. The batteries seem to charge well and the LED indicator is nice to show that you're getting a charge. There's a large flap that wraps the unit when closed but is also useful for hanging the panel; I haven't had to tie it up yet, just find a branch and wrap the flap around it and you're all set.
All that said, I have tried and tried to get this panel to charge my iPhone 3GS, but it simply won't. The iPhone knows it is connected to a power source, and even starts to charge a little, but I'm guessing there's either a) not enough juice to really get the phone going or b) the USB port doesn't have the data wires grounded the way the iPhone wants (more likely). There's some information about the iPhone's power idiosyncrasies here:
[...].
I can't give this a panel a perfect review because it has let me down, but I do think it is well designed and will probably come in handy with another device, just not the iPhone 3GS.
