Amazon.com The Equus 3140 Innova Dignostic Code Scanner is an enhanced scan tool that is loaded with many professional features. If you are new to diagnostic scanners, this handy tool connects to your vehicle, scans various parts of your car, truck or SUV, and retrieves a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and code definitions from your vehicle's computer. But even if you're a veteran to scanners and auto repair, you'll be impressed with the new functionality that Equus has added to the 3140. This device not only scans your vehicle, it also allows you to freeze-frame live timing and pinpoint your vehicle's problem. Instead of having to recreate a scenario over and over again, you can now playback the timing to scrutinize all the data and make a clear diagnosis. Combine this with Internet connectivity and the ability to interface with a PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic scanner in the palm of your hand. The Equus 3140 easily scans all OBD-II and many OBD-I vehicles. | As government agencies establish more stringent emission laws, vehicles continue to become more sophisticated for maintenance and repairs, forcing professional mechanics, DIYers, and consumers alike to find easy-to-use tools for diagnosing their vehicles. Many tools have already been developed to access these powerful on-board vehicle computers, but the Equus tool is particularly simple to use and surprisingly affordable. It is designed to be used by almost anyone, from the weekend mechanic to the ASE master technician. The 3140 Diagnostic Code Scanner can retrieve diagnostic codes in all OBD II (1996 and newer) and some of the most popular OBD I (1982 to 1995) vehicles. The scanner features a unique, patented all-in-one LCD screen that shows 25 parameters at once without the need to scroll through time consuming menus. Separate LED indicators located below the screen provide quick OBD I/M emissions checks; so you'll know if you're ready to pass those ever-increasingly stringent laws. Equus built the 3140 to display on-screen DTC definitions and user interfaces in English, Spanish, or French, and the trilingual language selection is accessed via a simple menu command. This device can store diagnostic codes in its memory for off-car review and analysis. Additionally, you can connect the 3140 to your PC with the included cables and software to generate, print, and save detailed diagnostic reports--and even update the scanner via the Internet. The 3140 links to all OBD II protocols including CAN (Controller Area Network). The tool captures and displays freeze frame data that will help you pinpoint and troubleshoot any problem. This device is equipped to retrieve the following OBD II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Generic Codes (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and Manufacturer Specific Codes (P1, P3, and U1). In addition, the tool provides live data (view, record, and playback live PCM data streams), bi-directional testing, vehicle ID capture, and O2 sensor results. The Equus 3140 can also perform diagnostic scans for the following OBD I vehicles: - General Motors: all 1982-1993, and some 1994-1995 models
- Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury: 1983-1995 models with EEC-IV systems (KOEO, KOER, timing check, cylinder balance test, output state test, and wiggle test)
- Toyota/Lexus: 1991-1995
- Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth: 1984-1995
- Jeep: 1993-1995

Works pretty good. July 29, 2010 Heather I have used this on several cars: 87 S15, 94 Camaro, 95 Escort (obd1), 96 F150, 99 Caravan, 99 Sebring, and a 99 Alero. The only problems I have had is the Chrysler enhanced data. So far none of the enhanced Chrysler data works and the tool was unable to communicate with the trans module. Could just be that the PCM is not compatible with those tests but why would the tool show that those tests could be performed? I also cannot get this tool to communicate with the 94 camaro, but I have not finished my diagnosis; could be a problem with the vehicle and not the tool. The first vehicle I scanned was my 96 f150. It would not communicate at first. I thought it was the tool but in the excitement of having a new toy in my hands, I forgot the check the diag link fuse. DURRR!!!!
THe tool its self seems to be made well for the price, but I would take extra care not to drop it. The cables and adapters are nice, but the scanner its self is not as rugged as a pro quality scan tool.
I wish it came with a usb adapter for the PC link. I bought a serial to usb adapter but can't get it to work. Luckily I have an old computer with a serial port. The firmware was current, so I didn't really need PC link anyway. Also, the case looks nice but is too small to store the scanner with the cable attached, so I just leave the case unzipped. I don't want to wear out the connector out with constant connecting and disconnecting.
This unit did freeze up on me while I was trying to get it to link to PC. There was a high frequency whine from the unit and I actually had to remove the batteries to get it to re-boot. Has worked fine since.
The diag software and website are completely useless, but an experienced tech shouldn't need them anyway. I am happy with this scanner, espically for the price.
Finally, I wish Innova could make an all inclusive scan tool. Obd 1, 2, abs, and bcm abilities all in one would be awesome.
worked once then died ! July 21, 2010 albonni I got it quick and used it once and then put it away ,Today i went to use it and all I got was a blank screen ! i am just a bit upset with this tool ?
a one time use don't know if i want to just dump it in the trash or even try to get a new one ....think I will try to get my money back !!!!

If you do your own car work this is a very valuable tool to have. It has saved me hundreds of dollars in repair costs. It is not too difficult to use considering all it does but it is not as easy as turning on your TV. It takes some study but it certainly provides for great troubleshooting of your car. There are times when it does not locate the exact item but it may just narrow it down for you. I use this tool in conjunction with the factory manuals and can find most problems. I'm really impressed with this tool.
This Equus 3140 is slick. June 30, 2010 Axle I chose this code reader because I have a few vehicles that are Pre 1996. So far the investment has paid off. I had three different vehicles that were showing problems and I was able to link this unit up on each one in only a few minutes. On my son's 99 Ford Taurus it identified a problem in the fuel system. It was a loose gas cap. It identified a problem on my 01 Chevy truck,. I used the 3140 to clear this code and it hasn't returned. I even was able to connect to my wife 95 Jaguar XJ6. It identified a problem with Cylinder number 1. This was not good news, oil on the spark plug. But the up side is that I now know were the problem is. The code reader pointed me in the right direction and I was able to locate the problem in a few short minutes. This saved me a ton of time and money not to mention saving me from further damage in that motor.
The Equus Code Reader worked flawlessly. The software tells you what to do next to link the unit with a vehicle or your PC. Your guided step by step on the units LCD. That's slick. It's all right there on the screen. You then download the code from the vehicle, then use the Code Reader to download the code into your PC.
The software links you up to the Equus support data base, where you can navigate through all the factory codes. To do this. Your PC will need to have a 9 pin RS232 serial port. Equus supplies the link cable with the unit.
I have not used the on-line diagnostic support system. So I can't comment on that feature. Filling in all the data for each vehicle is tedious even though I understand why the data is necessary. This is a feature I intend on using in the future.
The one black mark against this unit is the PC data link. In this day and age of plug and play. Equus should have this system available with a USB. Most PC's sold today, do not have the 9 pin Serial port on the Main Board. Some people would call it a game port for the older analog game pads and joysticks. I build my own computers and I didn't build one in this system. So I had to ad this port and use a PCI slot on the back of my system. Not everyone is comfortable with this. The serial link works fine, so I cannot mark it down for that reason. My point is that Equus would open up a larger market if they had a USB connection. Customers would find it much more user friendly in that respect.
