Product Description
MULTI TOOL, SKELETOOL CX, STAINLESS,

Amazon.com Product Description

Leatherman packs the full-size Skeletool with the tools you're likely to use most often.

Introducing the Brand New Skeletool CX from Leatherman
Get back to basics -- the very cool basics -- with Leatherman's Skeletool CX. Today’s outdoor enthusiasts want to keep weight and volume to a minimum without sacrificing quality and true functionality, and that's what the Skeletool is all about. Many multitools have multiple options, but they’re often heavier -- and they're loaded with more features than most people actually need on a regular basis. Conversely, pocket knives are light and streamlined, but they render themselves useless when the task calls for a more versatile tool. Enter the new Skeletool platform, offering minimal weight, compact size and endless capabilities.

Key User Features
The Skeletool CX has a large straight knife blade that can be accessed while the tool is closed; to open it, just place your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade and rotate it out until it's fully extended -- which will engage the safety lock. This locking mechanism is noted with a padlock symbol on the tool. To unlock the blade, press the locking mechanism towards the handle until the blade slides past the lock.

Equipped with a universal bit driver, the Skeletool offers real utility options like no other multitool. To change the tool bits, simply unfold the tool and remove the bit from the bit driver -- and pop it out. And replacing bits is just as easy. Just press a new one into position and you're good to go. There's even a spare bit located in the handle side opposite the knife blade. This tool includes the following bits: Phillips #1 and #2, screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch.

In the plier jaws you'll find a hard-wire cutter and a regular wire cutter. The regular wire cutter is great for softer grades of wire, but the hard-wire cutter is excellent for heavier jobs -- like cutting and bending fishhooks.

Multitool Capabilities:
The Skeletool keeps it simple -- and light, and compact, and easy to transport. Why waste time with pointless, heavy add-ons when all the basics are right at your fingertips? With its open hardware, skeletal design and hardy appearance, the Skeletool boasts a premium stainless steel blade, pliers, a universal bit driver, and a carabiner/bottle opener ... and that's it.

Key Tech Specs:

  • Length: 4 inches/10 cm closed
  • Weight: 5 ounces/142 grams
  • Materials: Stainless steel, Tungsten DLC coating, 154CM, carbon fiber (handle scale)
  • Included Bits: Phillips #1 and #2, Screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch

Leatherman makes a full range of complementary accessories and add-ons for this and other Leatherman products.

Optional Accessories (not included)
Spice up your Skeletool with genuine Leatherman accessories. Options include a bit kit that offers 21 double-ended bits for real versatility. From new belt sheaths to t-shirts and caps, genuine Leatherman accessories are durable, fun and show that you're a part of Leatherman World. With such a wide variety available, it's easy to find just the add-on that's right for you.

Warranty
All Leatherman products are covered by a 25-year limited warranty. If within 25 years from the purchase date of your genuine Leatherman tool you find any defect in material or workmanship, you can count on the manufacturer to make it right with fast warranty service. To obtain warranty service, return your tool to Leatherman Tool Group. Depending on the tool defect, they will decide whether to repair your tool or replace it with a product of equal or greater value. No variations, upgrades or refunds are offered.

The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality
In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!   July 25, 2010
Karen Wolmer (HAMPTON, CT, US)
This is a must have for any man out there. I wish there were better instructions, not all men are mechanically inclined, but thanks to YouTube helped one of my friends out. It is durable and with the Leatherman Name you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars The machines from Terminator would approve....   July 23, 2010

Man, I am by no means a tool and/or knife buff, but for some reason I just had to have one of these, just based on the coolness factor alone..... I know this is not much of a review as it relates to the functionality of the tool.... I didn't buy it because I was going "Into the Wild", I bought it because it looks and feels like something the machines from "Terminator" would have produced. Couldn't be happier!

5 out of 5 stars Functional, light, cool looking   July 23, 2010

Haven't tried to use it as a crow bar like some people have mentioned, but it seems thoughtfully constructed.I bought this for backpacking. I usually carry a knife and a Leatherman but have recently tried to really cut down on pack weight. I need a knife for random camp applications and I need pliers for fishing. I get both in a 5oz package now without really sacrificing much besides the size of the knife. If I wasn't concerned about weight I would probably still bring both a stout knife and a Leatherman, but this gets the job done for my purposes and gets 6-8oz off my pack weight with just one item. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Wallet, Keys, Cellphone, Skeletool.. OK - Good to go   July 9, 2010
S. K. Park (Orange County, CA USA)
I bought this guy as a birthday gift to myself - and it has been one of the best thing I've ever bought.

I liked the look of the tool and I liked the functions it provided. I was mainly looking for 1) a good knife and 2) reasonable pliers. I got both of these and then some with this tool. The major functions have been the Knife, the pliers, the screwdriver(bits), and the carabiner/bottle opener.

The Knife - This is a nice sharp knife. Even after a year and regular use it remains very sharp. My old multitool had a pretty dull knife, it was safe to run sharp side against a finger and could barely cut through materials. That is not the case with this knife. The best part is you don't have to open the pliers to use it (like on some other multitools). It locks into place solidly and feels great.
Truth be told I cut myself quite a bit early on when I was careless with the knife. Often, I wouldn't even know I had cut myself until I noticed I was bleeding. It's probably the first sharp knife I owned and I've quickly learned to appreciate just how sharp it is.

The Pliers - These have been a pleasant surprise. They're pretty strong similar to a regular pair of pliers. They're not a specific plier shape, more general - which is good in most situations. It's head is sharp enough to kinda act like a needlenose, but it's shape will let you sorta use it as a slip joint. Basically in a pinch it can work as either, but if you know ahead of time which you need it's better to grab the proper tool.

The cutter works pretty well, though in most situations I think I'd prefer the knife blade. And the stripper section is barely worth mentioning - It isn't particularly good and sometimes I've had better luck with just using the cutter.

The Bits - It's nice having both the Phillips and the flat-head bits on the tool they're easy to exchange, and secure themselves into place. The bits themselves are strong and are the sizes that will probably cover a good majority of the odd jobs you run into that need tightening. Using the tool as a screwdriver however leaves something to be desired. It works and is better than most pocketknives/multitools, but it isn't particularly easy to work with due to the shape of the tool. It isn't perfectly flat and has an unusual shape when used as a screwdriver. Still it is a great addition to the tool and adds great utility. An example of when it really shines is if you're say in the bathroom and notice a light switch plate has come lose. You can take out your Skeletool and tighten it without having to fetch a screwdriver.

The Carabiner/Bottle opener - Both excellent. I trust the carabiner to keep the tool wherever it is clipped to. The carabiner arm has smooth action and isn't difficult to open - which means it does not get in the way of the bottle opener. The bottle opener is very good. It's better than any key chain bottle opener I've used, and it's better than my swiss army knife.

"Ergonomics" - The size and weight of the tool make it comfortable to carry around everywhere. Sometimes it does feel a little big in my pockets (especially if something else is in the pocket) so I might use the belt clip. It really is useful enough to justify having it with me at all times and the weight is hardly an issue.

The blade can be used right or left handed, but opening the blade one handed is a right-handed operation. The way the blade comes out makes it hard to open one handed with your left hand.

As mentioned, the screwdriver/bit function isn't as comfortable as the pliers/blade use is. It works for a short tighten down/loosening situation, but I wouldn't think of using it for extended use unless I had no other choice. It's nice to know that while it might not be comfortable to use it this way, it at least can be.

Finally - the best part of this tool (for me) is that it's made great presents for friends. I suck at thinking of gifts, so having a default gift option that works is wonderful. I've bought several for people and everyone who has gotten one has been thrilled. My only problem is as this year has passed, almost everyone of my friends has either been gifted one or has bought one on their own so I will have to start thinking about what to give again.

5 out of 5 stars Always by my side.   July 6, 2010

Is there even an advantage to getting the CX? I assumed it'd be lighter, but I later checked on Leatherman's site and it shows the weight is the same. At least it looks cool. It's very minimal, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, it pretty much has all I need 95% of the time. Mine didn't come with the serrated knife as pictured, but I'll live. The carabiner is great to hook onto a belt loop instead of having it jingling in your pocket. This way I never lose another Leatherman ever again.
